Project overview
The project is located on the bustling Nan Tai Lane, which is one of the most vibrant small blocks in the Xinjiekou area of Nanjing. The surrounding area is filled with numerous thriving and trendy shops, and the dense residential population and convenient transportation bring a constant flow of people to these old streets. The focus of this space transformation is to provide a comfortable and cozy gathering place for the nearby community, a blended space where people can relax and enjoy coffee, food, wine, and emotional connections.
We aim to maintain a restrained and understated design for the storefront, creating a quiet yet warm atmosphere without being ostentatious. We will incorporate elements of “wood” and “stone,” which closely resonate with people’s primal senses, to present a natural and welcoming aesthetic. With an approachable and open stance, the design will seamlessly integrate into the local community.

Deconstruction and regeneration
In many cases, buildings in older communities have complex structures, which means that the basic architectural conditions for this project are not ideal. The irregular layouts, utility pipes occupying central positions, and inconveniences caused by residents living above pose several challenges. However, there are also notable advantages. The large skylights within the interior provide excellent natural lighting and a sense of openness.
We have conducted a comprehensive deconstruction of the floor plan, keeping only the original skylights and reinforcing them structurally. By relocating the central utility pipes and freeing up the core space, we have completely redesigned the circulation and layout of the space.

By proactively pushing the entrance inwards, we have increased the space for gathering and created a welcoming atmosphere that invites the community indoors. This design approach blurs the boundaries between the interior and exterior, fostering connections between people and activating social interactions. Coffee and food serve as our bridges, bringing people together in a warm and inclusive environment.

We have also reconfigured the shape of the bar counter to accommodate additional seating without obstructing the smooth flow of the main circulation path. With careful consideration, we have added bar seats to create an intimate “inner seating area” where both old friends and new acquaintances can enjoy coffee and wine up close.

Between the original doorways, additional platforms were added to create a “kakuuchi” area, coincidentally forming a “conversation window” facing the bar counter. As we lean and stand, enjoying our drinks, we can naturally interact with the bar counter, dynamically enhancing the spatial interaction.

The addition of an extra doorway brings about a flexible and open circulation path, allowing for a natural transition between coffee and cuisine, while also harmonizing symphony here. This space also incorporates efficient and comfortable restroom facilities, delineating them separately.

After structural reinforcement and optimization, the skylight and courtyard have been redesigned to form an L-shaped configuration, fully opening up one corner. This design allows unrestricted entry of outdoor air and natural daylight, allowing one to easily enjoy the distinct seasons and natural scenery of Nanjing.

The main materials selected include a variety of stones, handmade bricks, and marine boards to create a warm and comfortable atmosphere for the community store. Additionally, mirrors are strategically added to suitable wall surfaces and columns to extend the perception of space and blur the boundaries between adjacent areas.

The occasional blue ironwork accents beautifully complement the warm yellow tones, reminding diners as they enter that this is a bistro-style tavern with a touch of French flavor.
