Having a spot-on radar for locations where to open up shop next, it was inevitable The Hoxton would eventually land in Portland, the big little creative hub on the U.S. West Coast. The latest opening of the British boutique hotel chain follows the launch of its first stateside property in New York City last year, and additional outposts stateside are scheduled to open in the next few months in Los Angeles‘ revived downtown district and also in Chicago. The Hoxton Portland, as it’s called, has nestled in Chinatown, a neighbourhood in the very heart of the city, occupying a historic early 20th-century building. For its interior, the hotel chain has once again collaborated with the design bureau of London-based affiliate Ennismore which created settings inspired by Northwest modernism, a popular movement on the U.S. West Coast in the 1960s.

The hotel has just 119 guestrooms in four different categories and sizes, each offering great comfort and style. The design makes the most of the space, featuring rich walnut panelling and mid-century touches, plus artwork selected by Upfor, a local platform for both upcoming and established artists, and beautiful Clay Factor ceramics. Next to an ultra comfy bed, guests are pampered with a walk-in shower, wardrobe, and a desk. Mind you, rooms come with free water, WiFi, one hour of free calls to anywhere in the world, and a mini fridge which can be stocked with products from the reception shop with local products at supermarket prices.

Similar to its sister establishments, The Hoxton Portland not only aims to be a social hub for its guests, but also for the local community, and it has a number of fitting facilities up its sleeve to make that happen. Situated in the ground floor is La Neta, an all-day diner serving seasonal, Mexican-inspired dishes in an extended living room setting, albeit a rather fancy one. The basement bar mimics a speakeasy location-wise, but also doesn’t have a name. Nevertheless, it’s a style-infused spot where to chill over cocktails focused around rice-based spirits, Asian ingredients and teas, along with American-Chinese food. And that’s not all! The rooftop taqueria, Tope, is also inspired by Mexico, but this time it’s all about street food, and it’s mischievously paired with a mezcal-focused cocktail list and views of the city.
