A Renovation of a 360㎡ Luxury Apartment at Star-river
Star-river is undoubtedly the most noteworthy luxury residence of the millennium, representing the quintessential image of a garden apartment. In early 2024, Mr. Mei purchased this 360㎡ single-floor luxury apartment and invited us to design their new home.
During our first visit, we discovered that although this luxury home, built at the dawn of the millennium, had outdated decorative elements, many timeless classics had survived changing trends. The ebony main entrance door with its exaggerated grain and sheen, Egyptian Yellow marble corner patterns and shapes, and the silver-foil-plated chandelier base—these items, which had transformed from “modern” to “mid-century” over time, inspired us to carry out an archaeological-style renovation to uncover the essence of old-money charm: heritage.
Key Renovation Objectives:
1.Preserve the luxurious stone materials and linear designs, establishing a quiet luxury old-money aesthetic that aligns with contemporary tastes.
2.Adjust the spatial layout to fit the current family situation of the owner.
3.Update the outdated lighting system.
4.Enhance the overall comfort of the space.
When the renovation was complete, witnessing elements from 2024, the millennium, and the 1970s seamlessly merge in this space gave tangible meaning to Coco Chanel’s famous quote: “Fashion fades, only style remains.”
Given the owner’s minimal restructuring intentions and the ample space available, only functional adjustments were made. The residents—a young couple, their one-year-old baby, and two dogs—also plan to have a live-in nanny. Therefore, the home required room to grow. The owner needed a study that could accommodate work, reading, parent-child activities, and exhibitions. Additionally, the couple wanted separate walk-in closets.
The most significant change was to the study. We divided the originally dimly lit guest room into two areas. The windowless section became the wife’s exclusive walk-in closet within the master suite. The portion with natural light was transformed into a multifunctional study with modular furniture to adapt to changing needs.
The ebony entrance door left the deepest impression on our first visit. The deep maroon hue and the rich texture of the wood, enhanced by time, were impossible to replicate with modern materials. We based the indoor woodwork color on this feature. The Egyptian yellow marble was re-polished to a high gloss, reflecting the luxurious chandelier above.
The visual endpoint after entering is the corridor leading to the private bedroom area. We placed a marble statue at the end of the circular hallway, making it a visual focal point and reducing direct sight into private areas. The original crystal chandelier was replaced with a designer piece that better complements the silver-foil-plated base.
The original living room followed a traditional sofa-around-TV layout, which no longer suited the family’s lifestyle. We replaced it with a salon-like reception space surrounded by the owners’ collectibles.
